About Us: The 2nd May 2006 marked another very exciting chapter of Alexander Harris' history when they merged with leading law firm Irwin Mitchell to create the largest personal injury practice in the UK. Irwin Mitchell incorporating Alexander Harris was established.

Investigating a Claim: The first step is to secure funding for a client. In the majority of cases, a child is granted a public funding certificate. When a public funding certificate is granted by the Legal Services Commission (formerly known as the Legal Aid Board) that certificate imposes two limitations.
Compensation: Generally, awards of compensation are divided into two separate categories namely general damages and special damages. General damages are awarded for pain, suffering and loss of amenity.
Interim Payments: In some cases the Defendant admits liability and causation without the need for a trial. Sometimes the admission is received early on in proceedings and if so, an interim payment may be obtained.
Post Settlement Issues: Once the size of the award is known you will want some advice on how to protect your money for the future. A structured settlement is only available to Claimants who have received compensation awards. It is not available to the public in general.

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI): Traumatic brain injury is a type of an acquired brain injury. Traumatic brain injury is caused when a force impacts the brain affecting cognitive (thought process) and or physical (movement) functioning.

Severe Brain Injury: Severe brain injury usually affects people who have been unconscious for over 6 hours and who have suffered post-traumatic amnesia for 24 hours and over.
Moderate Brain Injury: Moderate brain injury usually affects people who have been unconscious for between 15 minutes and 6 hours. Although the side effects are usually not as acute as severe brain injury, a person may still experience problems with movement, speech, unexplained behaviour and anxiety.
Minor Brain Injury: A minor brain injury is usually diagnosed when a person has been unconscious for less than 15 minutes. Minor brain injuries can be caused by a variety of accidents including falls and walking into obstructions i.e. lampposts and lowered barriers.
Secondary Brain Injury: Following an injury to the brain other injuries can occur which are secondary to the original injury. This might be for example when the brain is starved of oxygen, due to a blockage. Secondary injuries exacerbate the first injury.
Open and Closed Head Injuries: 'Open head injuries' refer to injuries where the skull has been penetrated; an example of this includes a gunshot or a sharp object, which has pierced the skull.
Coma: The usual immediate effect of a head injury is a loss of consciousness, the person will be unresponsive to the outside world and this can be a matter of seconds, minutes or hours. Usually the length of time a person is in a coma will suggest the long terms effects of the head injury on the brain.
Post-Traumatic Amnesia (PTA): Post-traumatic amnesia is a period that a person suffers usually after coma or a long period of unconsciousness.
Epilepsy: Any type of brain injury can increase the risk of developing epileptic attacks. Epileptic seizures can vary in their severity and the fits can either affect the whole of the brain or small focused areas of the brain.
Persistent Vegetative State (PVS): PVS occurs when a person has lost all cognitive neurological function. A person with PVS may be able to breathe (if the lower part of the brain is still functioning) but has no control over speech, movement and thought. It is also thought that they have no awareness of their surroundings.
Linear fracture: Linear skull fractures are often usually minor; the brain may only have suffered bruising and haemorrhaging (internal bleeding) and there are rarely long term consequences affecting the nervous system.
Depressed fracture: These are a very serious group of fractures and are usually a consequence of slow impact with a large solid impact; a section of the bone is often dented. Depressed fractures can often lacerate arteries within the membrane (thin layers of tissue) of the brain and cause haemorrhage.
Comminuted and multiple fractures: Comminute means to break into a number of small pieces. Comminuted fractures are often the result of repeated blows, therefore the skull fracture tends to be shattered or fragmented into small pieces. Expressed fractures: These are unusual factures in which segments of fractured skull bone become lodged outside the skull, usually embedded in the scalp. This type of fracture is normally the result of missiles or blasts, which crush the skull; this is usually experienced in military combat or gun warfare.
Base of skull fractures: These encompass all types of fractures but they specifically occur at the base of the skull. Fractures in this area often have greater consequences.
Spinal Injury and Spinal Cord Injury: A spinal cord injury is one of the most devastating injuries that an individual can receive.
Silicosis: Silicosis is a respiratory lung disease caused by the inhalation of crystalline silica dust. Silica dust contains toxic particles that can cause lung inflammation.

Anterior cord syndrome: Anterior cord syndrome is damage to the front of the spinal cord, affecting pain, temperature and touch sensation, but leaving some pressure and joint sensation. Often motor function is unaffected.
Central cord syndrome: Central cord syndrome is damage to the centre of the spinal cord, generally resulting in loss of arm movement, but sparing the legs. Bladder and bowels may be unaffected. Recovery starts in the lower legs and works upwards.
Posterior cord syndrome: Posterior cord syndrome is damage to the back of the spinal cord, causing difficulty in co-ordinating movement, but reasonable motor power and pain and temperature sensation.
Brown-Sequard syndrome: Brown-Sequard syndrome is damage to one side of the spinal cord, causing a reduction of power on that side of the body, but retaining good sensation. The opposite will apply on the other side of the body - good power, but a loss of sensation.
Cauda Equina Lesion: The cauda equine is the nerves that spread out from the base of the spine (literally the horse's tail). Damage to these can cause loss of power and sensation in the legs. The bladder and bowels are also likely to be affected.

Emphysema: Emphysema is a form of lung disease. It is generally caused by smoking. Damage occurs to the elastic supporting structure within the lungs. This leads to breakdown and collapse of some of the airways, which causes air to become trapped and the lungs over-inflated.
Respiratory diseases: The most common respiratory disease is lung cancer, which includes emphysema. It can be triggered by asthma. Chronic Bronchitis and asthma are other forms of respiratory disease. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) encompasses bronchitis and emphysema.

Pleural Thickening: The pleura is a two layered membrane which surrounds the lungs and lines the inside of the ribcage. Some asbestos fibres inhaled into the lungs work their way to the pleura and may cause thickening or scarring to develop.

Pleural Plaques: Pleural plaques are patches of thickening over the pleura which become hardened over time. Pleural plaques are visible on chest x-ray and usually develop in the region of 10-20 years after exposure. They are a marker of past exposure to asbestos.
Fatal Asbestos Cases: If a family member has died from an asbestos related illness, certain members of the family may be able to bring a claim under the Fatal Accidents Act 1976 and the Law Reform (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1934 on behalf of the estate and themselves.
