Fatal Work Accidents
Accidents at work resulting in fatal injury
Sadly, each year, a significant number of workers are killed in fatal industrial accidents.
According to Health and Safety Executive statistics (2007/08), 228 workers lost their lives in work accidents.
The main industrial sectors, agriculture and construction have the highest rates of fatal injury. Indeed, together, these two sectors account for nearly half of the number of fatal industrial accidents.
The most common kinds of fatal injury to workers in recent years have been falls from height, being struck by a moving vehicle or being struck by a moving or falling object.

Case study - death at work
Mr Garner was killed in a work accident when a steel frame carrying a lorry engine toppled over and hit Mr Garner on the head.
Whilst trying to move an engine, one of the A frame’s legs went into a pit with the result that the A frame toppled over and hit Mr Garner.
At the inquest, the court heard from the Health and Safety Executive who stated that the gantry was designed to be used stationary and not for moving engines.
Following the work accident, the HSE issued a prohibition notice stopping the company using the A frame until a risk assessment had been carried out.
