Surgical Errors

Thank you very much for the brilliant service, professionalism and caring attitude whilst handling my recent claim.

Vicki, Sheffield

A large proportion of claims that we are asked to investigate are related to surgical procedures that have gone wrong both within the NHS and the private sector.

The team have acted for people where surgical equipment has been left inside the patient resulting in long term illness, for those where plastic surgery has resulted in disastrous consequences and for those where the post operative care has been of a standard below that expected and which has resulted in the patient being harmed unnecessarily in some way.

Our lawyers have also settled a number of cases relating to keyhole surgery. Tiny cameras and video screens which can enhance the surgeons vision and help guide with pinpoint accuracy a remote scalpel or laser, should turn many complex operations into little more than formalities.

Developments of keyhole surgery techniques have taken medicine into new frontiers and taken some patients into perilous territory. One client underwent keyhole surgery which went wrong. An important section of bile duct was mistakenly severed, and what should have been a routine operation became a crisis requiring major reconstruction. One error through the keyhole could have cost the women her liver, even her life.

Keyhole surgery can have many benefits however, even the most skilled and experienced surgeons can encounter problems owing to a lack of training with this new technology. So much of what makes surgery successful is down to feel - the surgeons actually touching their work. But keyhole procedures remove the surgeon from the patient, like playing a video game. Eye to hand co-ordination is difficult at best when the surgeon is operating while looking into a TV monitor instead of the patient. Mistakes can be made.
