These encompass all types of fractures but they specifically occur at the base of the skull. Fractures in this area often have greater consequences.

Base of skull fractures can also be suspected in falls when the individual has landed on their feet; the force of the landing may transmit up the legs and vertebral column into the base of the skull causing fracture.
