Vaccine Damage Payment Scheme: Comment from Alexander Harris

28/06/2000

I would like to thank you and your colleagues for the kindness shown to myself and my wife. I class myself as very fortunate to have met such kind and caring people.

Raymond, Hertfordshire

The Government announced yesterday that it is to improve the vaccine damage payment scheme. The proposals included the following:-

  • To increase the payment to 100,000. Those who have already received payments will have them topped up on a sliding scale (58,000 to 67,000).
  • To lower the threshold of disability from 80% to 60%. The Minister did not say if there will be a sliding scale or whether, as before, someone either will or will not be eligible for the payment.
  • Time limits have been changed. A claim can now be brought up to the age of 21.

The Vaccine Damage Payment Unit, whilst only hearing of the changes yesterday, have informed Alexander Harris that they will be contacting all those who will benefit by this change. However if someone has moved address, they should write in to the unit giving their new address and quoting their VAD reference or national insurance number of the child. The address of the Vaccine Damage Payment Unit is: Palatine House, Lancaster Road, Preston, PR1 1HB.

This is undoubtedly real progress, not because of the financial increase, which is a small when compared to the disability suffered by those damaged by vaccines, but because it represents a real acknowledgement of the fact of vaccine damage. Hopefully we will no longer have the doublespeak from the Government denying the existence of vaccine damage, but at the same time making payments under the scheme.
