MHRA warning over 'flab jab' Lipostabil
19/10/2005
May I thank you for the way my accident claim has been handled, after my accident my confidence was very low indeed but the sympathetic handling of my case restored my confidence.
John, Sheffield
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) issued strong warnings about the safety and effectiveness of Lipostabil - the 'flab jab' earlier this year.
Lipostabil - what is it?
A Soya-based product, which is intended to be used to dissolve fat blockages in the blood.
However it is now being used by some as a cosmetic treatment to dissolve fat in the body. Liopostabil is not licensed in the UK for cosmetic use. The MHRA are aware of three adverse incidents in relation to the cosmetic use of Lipostabil.
UK medical authorities have raised concerns over the drug being used for cosmetic reasons, and the drug manufacturers have warned against injecting Lipostabil under the skin.
The BBC's watchdog programme last night followed the MHRA as they carried out a raid on one clinic they believe had been openly advertising and supplying Lipostabil.
