Kerry's story - severe burn injury suffered on holiday
19/04/2005
Thank you so much for handling my case so well. You came to know us at a great time of sadness and you were so kind. We will always remember you as very professional but also very warm hearted.
Sylvia, Tamworth
Kerry and her husband Michael were standing beside a hotel pool bar, when one of the bar staff threw a lit match into an alcoholic drink. Once the match hit the drink, it exploded in flames and Kerry's legs were set on fire. Michael quickly grabbed his wife and jumped with her into the swimming pool in order to douse the flames.
Michael asked for an ambulance to be called, but the local medical centre said that they would only attend on payment of £100 and production of passports. Kerry and Michael were in swimwear, neither had currency nor their passports and Michael had to carry his wife 700 metres to the medical centre.
Their holiday was entirely ruined. Kerry had to go back to the medical centre twice a day for follow up treatment and to change the dressings. Five or six days later her wounds got infected, and she was diagnosed as having second and third degree burns. For the remainder of the holiday Kerry could not walk and had to use a wheelchair.
Kerry was medically advised that on her homeward flight she would need wheelchair access and that she would need to have her legs elevated but these were not provided on the flight home.
Injury overseas solicitor Simon Taylor is acting on behalf of Kerry:"Kerry has suffered horrific injuries from what seems to have been an act of gross negligence by the hotel staff. Under UK law, the tour operator is liable for such acts of negligence, and we hope that in this case Airtours are able to make an early admission of liability."
