Cryptosporidium outbreak at Turkish Hotel

05/09/2005

Thank you to everyone involved in my case. I never dreamed of such an outcome and you have made such a long and difficult case seem easy and bearable.

Nigel, Derbyshire

Guests who stayed at the Kaya Belek Hotel in Turkey have had their holiday ruined by a bug found in the swimming pool, which causes sickness and diarrhoea.

Over a hundred people have been affected by the waterborne parasite cryptosporidium, which can be particularly serious for the young, the elderly and those with any immuno-deficiency. Guests suffered with stomach cramps, vomiting, diarrhoea, fever and dehydration.

The tour operator, Thomas Cook, have confirmed that cryptosporidium has been found in the pool and arranged for guests to fly home early.

An outbreak of the bug affected hundreds of holidaymakers at the Alcudia Pins hotel in Majorca two years ago. Alexander Harris is representing more than 1500 holidaymakers who were struck down with cryptosporidium at the hotel. Many of the claims have already settled against the tour operator MyTravel

"Tour operators are responsible for the safety and care of their customers" said travel litigation solicitor Simon Taylor.

"Cryptosporidium can be very serious, it has an incubation period of anything from 2 to 14 days - holidaymakers may only begin to show symptoms when they return home. Anyone who suspects they may have any symptoms should seek urgent medical advice."

"The illness can ruin family holidays which people have saved for and looked forward to for many months. If the tour operator is at fault, holidaymakers can be compensated not only for the illness suffered but also for loss of enjoyment and expenses incurred. Even in the case of short term illnesses compensation can exceed £1000 per person affected."
