06/01/2005

I would like to thank you and your colleagues for the kindness shown to myself and my wife. I class myself as very fortunate to have met such kind and caring people.

Raymond, Hertfordshire

A family doctor accused of murdering a patient is being investigated over the deaths of three further patients.

Dr Howard Martin was arrested in May after concerns were raised by the family of Harry Gittins, and was later charged with administering a fatal dose of morphine to a patient. He is currently awaiting trial.

The police have exhumed the body of a third patient, having exhumed the bodies of two other patients earlier this month following recent checks on medical records.

Dr Martin has been suspended by the General Medical Council pending the outcome of the case.

The results of the exhumations are expected in about five weeks.

A spokesperson for Alexander Harris, who represented relatives of the victims of Harold Shipman and is also involved in representing families of those who died in suspicious circumstances at two other hospitals said "While exhumation can be distressing for families, it is necessary in order to gain important evidence and to ensure that a thorough investigation of this evidence can take place."
