Woman to undergo second operation after botched surgery by bogus gynaecologist
01/03/2005
Thank you to everyone involved in my case. I never dreamed of such an outcome and you have made such a long and difficult case seem easy and bearable.
Nigel, Derbyshire
Alexander Harris has been contacted by a former patient of bogus gynaecologist Henry Akpata following a sterilisation operation he performed.
Henry Akpata qualified as a doctor in his native country of Nigeria, but failed the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists exam.
Working at 35 hospitals nationwide, Mr Akpata, from South London is believed to have operated on hundreds of women across the country over a period of seven years, some of whom may have been permanently injured. He has been jailed for a year for fraud.
Rebecca went into hospital to have her third child by caesarean section, followed by a sterilisation operation.
Several months later she received a letter from her NHS trust informing her that one of the doctors involved in the sterilisation procedure did not have the requisite qualifications. Shortly after this she noticed an article in a national newspaper about a Henry Akpata, who worked in hospitals across the UK posing as a gynaecologist. The hospital confirmed that the doctor in question in her case was Mr Akpata.
Rebecca then had to have a procedure carried out to check whether her sterilisation operation had been successful. The results were inconclusive. She now has to undergo more surgery to check whether the sterilisation has been carried out successfully.
An NHS helpline has been set up for women who have concerns. Any women who are concerned can call the helpline on 020 8410 8796.
