Isle of Man Inquiry begins

01/01/2000

Thank you very much for all your hard work, especially as the outcome is better than expected. Can't thank you enough.

Shana, Wiltshire

A public inquiry into the deaths of two young people who died on the Isle of Man in 2002 begins today.

Samantha Barton and George Green were murdered in Braddan, whilst in the care of Social Services. Peter Charles Newberry was convicted of their murders in late 2003 and was sentenced to a minimum of twenty years in prison.

"Evidence at the trial gave rise to significant concerns about the environment in which children in care on the Isle of Man were living. The parents of Samantha and George are concerned that more could have been done to keep them safe" said Chris Gawne of Alexander Harris; the solicitor for the families.

"The first stage of the inquiry will look at the care and support provided to Samantha and George over their time in care and consider whether things should have been done differently."

The first stage will begin on 23rd May 2005 and is due to finish in late July.

"The second stage of the inquiry will examine in more general terms the care and support available for children of secondary school age and above on the Isle of Man with behavioural or emotional problems."

The second stage of the inquiry is due to begin in October 2005.

"The inquiry will look to make recommendations to help such children and avoid a tragedy similar to this ever happening again. The families welcome the inquiry and are pleased that the care provided to George and Samantha will be examined in detail."
