Doctor who sexually assaulted seven women has appeal quashed
16/11/2005
Thank you so much for handling my case so well. You came to know us at a great time of sadness and you were so kind. We will always remember you as very professional but also very warm hearted.
Sylvia, Tamworth
Roy Murray, the doctor who was convicted of sexually assaulting a number of women patients yesterday lost his appeal to have the convictions against him quashed.
Lord Justice Scott Baker upheld the complaints against him, saying that he had subjected his victims to needless intimate medical examinations.
Roy Murray practised at the Liverpool Road surgery in St Helens over a period of about 20 years from the early 1980s until his retirement in 2002.
He decided to appeal on the grounds that the Crown Court judge had not adequately directed the jury.
This was rejected by the judge.
Mr Murray was arrested in August 2002 after one woman confided in a counsellor who alerted police. More than 40 victims eventually came forward.
He had been investigated by healthcare chiefs and had a number of complaints made against him.
Clinical negligence solicitor Louise Hunt represents seven women who were assaulted by Roy Murray.
