Concerned patients of general surgeon Gavin Denton bring in top law firm to investigate
21/10/2004
We found you very professional as well as approachable, helpful and caring. We can now move on and look forward to a more stable and secure future. I am sure that this would not have happened without yourselves being involved.
Jayne, Evesham
A group of former patients and the relatives of patients under the care of general surgeon Gavin Denton have called in leading health law firm Alexander Harris to investigate their cases.
The group who have approached Alexander Harris includes Heidi Chalfont whose mother Mathilde Chalfont died in Macclesfield General Hospital whilst under the care of Gavin Denton and Rebecca Hutton and her sister Katie Cooper whose mother Sylvia Cooper died in Scunthorpe General Hospital whilst under the care of Gavin Denton.
The patients and families involved agreed that: "Those whom we have spoken to have patiently waited for answers and feel that they have got no where. Bringing in our help to find out what is happening and provide some guidance is something they all unanimously feel they have to do if they are to get the answers they deserve. They feel that they owe it to their loved ones to find out what happened in their individual cases. In addition they are collectively concerned that Mr Denton is still operating and that other people may be at risk. Most importantly they want to make sure that nobody else has to go through what they have been through themselves."
The Group are interested to hear from anyone else who has been treated by Mr Gavin Denton and who has concerns about the care he afforded. Please contact in confidence Zoë Holland at Alexander Harris Solicitors who will be able to put you in touch - 08700 778877.
Background
Following complaints in 2000 from colleagues the East Cheshire NHS Trust started an investigation. He worked both at Macclesfield District General Hospital and BUPA Regency Hospital in Macclesfield. In April 2001 he was formally suspended and a complaint from Ms Chalfont was sent to the GMC in February 2002. The GMC conducted an assessment of Denton's performance and fitness to practice, the outcome of which was that the GMC imposed a retraining programme for 12months. Denton tendered his resignation with effect from 31 December 2003 and would not be returning to work at Macclesfield District General Hospital. Denton began work at Scunthorpe General Hospital and in April 2004 Mrs Cooper died whilst under his care. The GMC Interim Orders Committee imposed conditions on Dentons registration for 18months until 7 March 2006. Conditions include confining his medical practice to posts within the NHS in general surgery where work will be supervised by a consultant with the same speciality.
