Irwin Mitchell incorporating Alexander Harris represents a number of people who have suffered from autism or behavioural problems after taking the drug epilim, used to control epilepsy.

One of the cases is approaching its ten year limitation period -in October 2006.

"We are challenging existing law, under which one of our clients will not be able to pursue a clinical negligence case after a cut off point of October 2006," said specialist clinical negligence solicitor David Body, who represents a number of children who have suffered from autism or behavioural problems as a result of taking epilim.

"Epilim has caused serious and permanent damage to a large number of people. It should not have been administered without rigorous testing," continued David.

Women who took Epilim whilst pregnant gave birth to children with problems including autism and behavioural problems.

Epilim - an anti-convulsant medicine which helps to prevent epileptic seizures.

The manufacturers of Epilim, the trade name for sodium valproate, Sanofi-Aventis, say that people were warned of any possible side effects.

Over 140 families are believed to be affected.

The Organisation for Anti-Convulsant Syndrome (OACS) helps the families involved.

Epilim was prescribed to epilepsy sufferers in Ireland.
