£1m for boy left brain damaged by hospital

A boy left brain damaged through hospital negligence has today been awarded £1million.
Muhammad Hassan, 15, suffered irreversible damage to his brain following an appendix operation in April 2000 at Leicester Royal Infirmary. Following the operation Muhammad was discharged from hospital, but his wound became infected. He was readmitted to hospital five days later where they failed to treat him with the correct antibiotics. Muhammad's condition significantly deteriorated and he suffered severe brain damage as a result.
"Because of this negligence my son's life has been taken away from us" said Mrs Hassan today. "Our son and our whole family's life has been destroyed since this happened. My elder son has lost his brother and friend. Muhammad always cared for his little sister and she has lost that."
"It is so painful to watch him fighting for his life every day. He suffers every day and I cry every day when I think about my healthy clever boy."
Louise Hunt, the family's solicitor added: "Muhammad requires twenty-four hour care. Even though he is now at home he needs a ventilator to help him breathe. His family have cared for him all along and there have been many setbacks. Muhammad's condition deteriorated further last year and the hospital wanted to switch his ventilator off. The family fought then for him as they have now and this settlement reflects the level of their commitment to him as well as the care and support that he needs."
