Young Woman Hospitalised After Illness At Four Star Hotel
14/11/2011
Specialist holiday illness solicitors have called on a tour operator to implement improved procedures after a young couple at one of its newest resorts saw their holiday ruined by gastric illness.
Gemma Louise Bromley and James Goode, both 23, from Oldham, stayed at the Grand Faros Hotel in Marmaris, Turkey, in July when Gemma developed an illness just a week into their two week holiday.
Ms Bromley was seen by a doctor at the resort who diagnosed her with gastroenteritis before placing her on an IV drip and providing her with medication. Due to Gemma’s poor health, the couple decided to travel home four days early and visited Gemma’s doctor in the UK. She was then admitted to hospital where it was then found she had a blockage in her bowel.
The couple have now approached specialist travel lawyers at Irwin Mitchell to take legal action against tour operator ‘Jewel In The Crown Holidays’.
Gemma said: “The health and safety standards at the hotel were, in my opinion, not good enough. The restaurant was serving hot food which was merely lukewarm, and food was left uncovered with new dishes being added to the food already left out which is something you don’t expect of a four-star resort.
“After I fell ill I was forced to stay in our room, which only made things worse as the air conditioning was broken. I was so worried when I fell ill. You just don’t expect this to happen when you go away on a relaxing break. It was supposed to be our dream holiday, but it was ruined.”
The Grand Faros Hotel has received mixed reviews on the TripAdvisor website, with one user stating that they had “stayed in other hotels in Marmaris and this was the worst by a large margin”, and that “there is no way that this hotel is four star standard”.
Elizabeth Tetzner, a travel law expert at Irwin Mitchell, said: “It is concerning to hear that Gemma suffered from serious gastric illness following her holiday in July this year. We would request that the tour operator work with us quickly to resolve this case amicably on behalf of our clients.”
