We just wanted to say thank you. We will never be able to repay you or express how grateful we are to you for all the support and help. There would have been no one in the world that we would have had in preference to you to act for us.

John, Newcastle Upon Tyne

A man whose stomach was mistakenly removed by surgeons has been given a six-figure compensation payout.

John Ford, from Bloxwich in Walsall was 68 when he was misdiagnosed with stomach cancer.

But after his stomach was removed it discovered the hospital pathologist had misdiagnosed tests and Mr Ford had only a benign tumour. This required little more than careful monitoring.

Royal Wolverhampton Hospitals NHS Trust admitted liability for breach of duty of care.

Mr Ford now suffers from constant pain and discomfort.

"I am either constipated or have diarrhoea and am afraid to leave the house in case I need a bathroom," said John.

His operation was carried out at Walsall Manor Hospital in October 2002.

The pathologist involved had been on loan from the Wolverhampton trust.

Specialist cancer misdiagnosis solicitor Timothy Deeming, acting for Mr Ford said:

"Of particular concern is that the pathologist completely missed the main features associated with stomach cancer."

"This failure has led to John not only suffering unnecessary distress after the misdiagnosis of stomach cancer but also further pain and permanent damage after his stomach was needlessly removed."
