Queen Mary 2 passengers angry as cruise is halted

24/01/2006

Thank you to everyone involved in my case. I never dreamed of such an outcome and you have made such a long and difficult case seem easy and bearable.

Nigel, Derbyshire

Dissatisfied passengers on the luxury Queen Mary 2 cruise ship have spoken out after the ship was forced to abandon three stops in exotic locations including Barbados.

Passengers have threatened to refuse to disembark when the ship reaches Brazil to prevent it continuing its journey.

Holidaymakers have accused the ship's operator of downplaying the scale of outrage on board, and have spurned an offer to refund half the cost of trip in compensation.

The QM2 changed its itinerary after an accident delayed its Florida departure.

It was forced to cancels stops in the Caribbean islands of St Kitts and Barbados, and Salvador in Brazil after one of its propellers was damaged on departing from Fort Lauderdale, leaving it sailing two days behind schedule.

Passengers say they were only informed of the revised route once they were at sea.

QM2's operator, Cunard has offered a 50% refund to about 1,000 people due to disembark at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

However, passengers say the offer applies only to the cost of the cruise and does not address the cost of flights or hotels at the aborted destinations, which they say form a significant part of the total cost their holidays.

Specialist travel litigation solicitor Simon Taylor who represents a number of people who were dissatisfied with their holiday on the QE2 cruise ship during the Trafalgar celebrations said:

"The cruise itinerary has been changed without any reference to the passengers on board, and as a result they have not received the cruise they paid for. A full investigation into all of the circumstances is necessary in order to establish passengers' rights to full and proper compensation."
