Negligence by doctors on the rise - number of complaints submitted to the GMC rises
11/07/2006
Thank you very much for the brilliant service, professionalism and caring attitude whilst handling my recent claim.
Vicki, Sheffield
Higher numbers of doctors are being reported to the General Medical Council (GMC) for negligence.
Record numbers of complaints are being made against doctors including a disproportionate amount against medics trained overseas, the General Medical Council said today.
Nearly 5000 complaints against doctors were lodged with the GMC in 2005.
These complaints include serious misconduct offences which can lead to a doctor being struck off, and other fitness to practice issues.
Doctors who qualified outside the UK have a 10% chance of facing a disciplinary hearing - twice that of UK qualified doctors.
In 2005 over thirty doctors were struck off by the GMC's fitness to practice panel.
