Law Firm ‘Gets Packing’ In Support Of Walsall Hearing Charity

10/05/2011

A team of solicitors from a leading UK law firm have teamed up with a national hearing charity to raise money for deaf and deaf-blind residents at a Walsall care home.

Solicitors from the Birmingham office at Irwin Mitchell, one of the UK’s leading law firms, joined members of the Royal Institute for the Deaf to pack shoppers’ bags at Marks and Spencer in New Street, Birmingham, raising £727.

The money raised will go towards funding a special sensory garden at the care home, based in the Caldmore area of Walsall.

The RNID, the largest charity in the UK for hearing loss, celebrates its 100th birthday this year and both local supporters and members of the Irwin Mitchell team have been invited to attend a special birthday party at Buckingham Palace, which will be hosted by HRH Prince Philip in June.

Louise Scott, a solicitor at Irwin Mitchell’s Birmingham Office who organised the fundraising event and has been nominated to receive a regional award for ‘Delivering Results for the RNID’, commented: “Hearing loss and deaf blindness are far more common than people realise so it was great for us to be able to raise money and at the same time help raise public awareness about this life changing disability.

“We all had a great day raising cash for the sensory garden and hope that it will give the residents at the Walsall care home something which will help to improve their quality of life.

“We have a number of other fundraising plans for the garden and a team from Irwin Mitchell will be joining the RNID and the residents to help create the garden later this year.”

Helen Lawrence, RNID’s Service Manager added: “We have been completely overwhelmed by the support shown by the Irwin Mitchell volunteers. The money raised will be used to establish a sensory garden which will make use of different smells, textures and bright colours.

“The garden will give the deaf and deafblind residents a chance to interact with the world around them and appreciate the things that we take for granted every day.”
