Changes to Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme
09/12/2005
Thank you very much for all your hard work, especially as the outcome is better than expected. Can't thank you enough.
Shana, Wiltshire
Under proposals for the new compensation scheme, the focus will be on people with more serious injuries. People with minor injuries will receive practical help.
The current £500,000 award limit would be removed, and the small awards for victims of crime with minor injuries including concussion, fractured ribs, and minor burns would be stopped.
The existing scheme was criticised by those affected by 7 July bombings.
Specialist criminal injuries solicitor Hilary Pickup comments:
"The proposal to remove the current £500,000.00 limit on compensation will enable victims of crime who have suffered catastrophic injuries to have access to the compensation that they need to enable them to access rehabilitation, purchase aids and equipment and suitable accommodation."
"However the proposal to remove entitlement to damages for minor injuries is not ideal - however minor the physical injury may be, the trauma and long term effects of an assault or mugging can last for the remainder of that person's life and be extremely debilitating."
