Breast cancer misdiagnosis - women wrongly given the all-clear at two hospitals in Manchester

24/01/2006

I would like to thank you and your colleagues for the kindness shown to myself and my wife. I class myself as very fortunate to have met such kind and caring people.

Raymond, Hertfordshire

A number of women who had breast cancer screening at Trafford General Hospital and North Manchester General Hospital have been recalled for further screening after a radiologist misdiagnosed a number of women.

A number of women were given the all-clear but later told this was incorrect.

The consultant radiologist has been suspended from both of the hospitals for misinterpreting mammograms.

Around 2500 scans were checked, and over 200 women's readings were found to be incorrect. Of these, up to 23 may have breast cancer after being given the all-clear.

Specialist misdiagnosis solicitor Zoe Holland who represents a number of clients including Barbara Daly who has been heavily featured in the media said:

"These women have undergone significant trauma having been given the all-clear and then told they do in fact have breast cancer. Any women who have been affected may be entitled to compensation and should seek specialist legal advice."

"It is unacceptable that this kind of mistake has been made on such a large scale. We would like to see stricter guidelines put in place to monitor and regulate doctors to prevent this kind of tragedy occurring."
