Black Prince cruise ship - passengers struck down with highly contagious virus

09/06/2006

May I thank you for the way my accident claim has been handled, after my accident my confidence was very low indeed but the sympathetic handling of my case restored my confidence.

John, Sheffield

Over 100 passengers on the Black Prince cruise ship were struck down with a highly contagious vomiting virus.

The Black Prince left Leith in Edinburgh for a seven-day cruise to Norway last weekend.

Over 100 passengers were diagnosed with the bug and confined to their cabins.

The Fred Olsen cruise ship returned to Scotland today.

The cruise of the Norwegian fjords had over 400 passengers on board.

Fred Olsen Cruise Lines said in a statement that over 100 cases of a 'norovirus - like' virus had been found on board.

They said that extensive cleansing and disinfecting programmes were carried out daily on board their cruise ships.

The next departure of the ship has been delayed to ensure the ship is thoroughly cleaned.

Norovirus is a highly contagious bug which causes severe vomiting and diarrhoea. It usually affects sufferers for between 24 and 48 hours.

Recent outbreaks of viruses thought to be norovirus on the Sea Princess and Van Gogh cruise ships ruined the holidays of a number of passengers.

Specialist injury and illness overseas solicitor Suki Chhokar said:

"It is very worrying to see yet another outbreak of illness on board a cruise ship."

"Simple preventative measures can be put in place to halt the spread of these bugs."

"In many cases these episodes not only ruin peoples holidays but can result in long term health issues."
