It might have been over 60 years since she was exposed to asbestos but the deadly substance killed Elizabeth Hallows, an inquest was told.
Mrs Elizabeth Hallows, 80, used to repair lorries and carried out general maintenance she also made Bailey bridges at the Butterley Works, Ripley, she left in the 1940s.
Died of malignant mesothelioma of the pleura
Pathologist Dr Ian Hopper found she died of malignant mesothelioma of the pleura, the linings of the lung and although he found no asbestos, he believed there was "no doubt" her illness was caused by it.
Exposure of asbestos
Questioned by her family, Dr Hopper said the disease often developed between 30 and 50 years after exposure to asbestos.
"I have heard of cases of 60 years plus. The reaction to it is unpredictable," he added.
Her son Roger Wood of Park Street, Wessington said that Her health had been "very good until the last two years."
Verdict death from malignant pleural mesothelioma
Derby deputy coroner Dr Turlough Farnan recorded a verdict that she died of the industrial disease of malignant pleural mesothelioma caused by exposure to asbestos.
