Woman receives £2.1m for severe head injury caused by Horses kick

I would like to thank you again for the speedy and sensitive way in which you have dealt with this matter. I would have no hesitation in recommending your firm to anyone in the future.

Pamela, Castleford

A young woman was today awarded £2.1m after being left with severe head injury after being kicked in the head by a horse 10 years ago.

Katie Witcombe was injured in April 1996 while helping out at Four Winds Equestrian Centre, near Spalding, Lincolnshire, where her pony, Lady, was kept. Katie, who was 13 years of age at the time of the incident, was in a field trying to catch Lady when another horse called Pandora galloped down and kicked out.

Severe head injury

Katie suffered a severe head injury which means she now requires 24-hour care. The money she has been awarded will mean that she can live in her own home, gaining as much independence as possible, near her parents in Spalding.

Liability was agreed at 70% in Katie's favour in 1998 and the amount of damages had now been resolved.

Cathryn Godfrey who specialises in dealing with horse related accidents said "This is another example of the serious and devastating injuries that can be caused by horses. Riding and caring for horses carries many risks and unfortunately injuries such as these can occur."

Horse related accident

"If you have been injured in a riding or horse related accident you should seek legal advice as soon as possible in connection with a claim, because there are strict time limits within which to do so."
