Six Figure Compensation for Man Injured in Car Accident

A student has been awarded more than £325,000 in compensation after colliding with a stolen car that was left abandoned in the central lane of a motorway.

Our client, a university student from Manchester, suffered serious injuries in the crash in 2002 after the car he was travelling in collided with the stationary vehicle left at night on the M56 in Cheshire. The vehicle, which it was later revealed was stolen, was left in the central lane of the motorway with no lights visible.

As a result of the accident, our client sustained multiple injuries, including a head injury, a broken right wrist and an injury to his left leg. The most serious injury was to his pelvis, where two fractures led to a loss of sexual function.

Despite our client having no memory of the accident due to his injuries, specialist solicitors from Irwin Mitchell were able to advance his road accident claim by obtaining details of the incident from the police, trying to locate the owner of the stolen vehicle and then obtaining details of the insurance covering the vehicle.

To allow our client to continue his studies in Manchester, Paul Brown from our Newcastle office successfully secured a series of interim payments in excess of £45,000, allowing him to continue his studies without undue concerns over financial hardship.

The insurers of the vehicle later accepted liability for the accident in full and, after medical evidence was received confirming the likely future diagnosis; a final out of court settlement in excess of £325,000 was agreed.
