Military Injury Claim Settles for £780,000

Specialist solicitors from Irwin Mitchell have secured around £780,000 in military injury compensation for a client who suffered crush injuries whilst serving in Iraq.

Our client sustained significant crush injuries to his left foot, namely an open dislocation of the left foot with multiple fractures of the second – fifth metatarsal when a reversing DROPS vehicle impacted with him whilst he was undertaking his responsibilities for stock taking ammunition.

His injuries required wound debridement, K Wiring and he has since undergone two skin grafts from his left thigh and is still receiving help with his rehabilitation.

Following his discharge from hospital, our client commenced physiotherapy but his progress was severely limited by pain, restricted mobility and restricted weight bearing. At the time of his discharge from physiotherapy in January 2004, he was only able to walk 200m with two elbow crutches due to pain, despite orthotics being provided to help him to gain better foot positioning.

He was initially able to return to work in an administrative capacity but found mobilising around camp extremely difficult and was subsequently signed off work permanently.

The military compensation settlement included damages that reflected the pain caused by the injuries that were sustained due to the lack of safety precautions put into place by the MoD.

Damages were also awarded to reflect the restriction that the injury has put on our client in relation to his future employment prospects.
