Barry, DoncasterSusie, 16, went into hospital to have a thyroglossal cyst - a lump in her neck, caused by a build-up of fluid removed from under her chin.
However the surgeon misdiagnosed the type of cyst Susie had, and after he had operated on it the cyst became bigger.
As a result of this, Susie had to have several further operations to remove the cyst. She now has severe, permanent scarring underneath her chin.
The hospital trust admitted liability, and specialist clinical negligence solicitor Edel Quinn settled Susie's case for a five figure sum.
Thyroglossal cyst
This occurs when fluid builds up in the lower portion of the thyroglossal duct, at base of the tongue to form a cyst.
Cysts mostly occur in people aged between 15 and 30.
If the cyst becomes inflamed this may result in pain and swelling. If it becomes infected this can cause further problems. It can also put pressure on the airway, very occasionally causing difficulty breathing or swallowing
An operation is usually performed to remove the cyst once it has been detected. The operation may be performed for medical or cosmetic reasons.
