Asbestosis is a serious, progressive, long term lung disease caused
by inhalation of asbestos fibres usually over a prolonged period
These
fibres then become lodged in the lung and the lung tissue becomes
thickened and scarred which gradually affects the ease of breathing.
Asbestosis
tends to appear 20 years or more after exposure to asbestos. The main
symptoms of asbestosis include breathlessness, coughing and a feeling
of tightness in the chest. Although sometimes asbestosis causes no
symptoms or very little disability.
Asbestosis may damage the
function of the lungs and asbestosis may worsen over time and can be
accompanied by the development of further asbestos-related diseases.
